The majority our topo holdings contain the popular 7.5 minute series (1:24,000 scale) covering the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Alaska is covered with a 15 minute series (1:63,360) and 1° x 2° (1:250,000) series. Various other states also are covered in the 1° x 2° (1:250,000) series.

The United States coverage includes the 30' x 60' series (1:100,000) for each state. In addition, Reed Library has a USGS County Map Series in either 1:50,000 or 1:100,000 scale for parts of Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The USGS Bureau of Land Management Surface Management Status Maps at 1:100,000 scale cover Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

U.S. Geological Survey Thematic Maps
Reed Library’s collection includes USGS Thematic Maps in the following categories: Antarctic Maps, Coal Investigations Series Maps, Circum-Pacific Maps, Geophysical Investigations, Geologic Quadrangle, Hydrologic Maps, Hydrologic Unit Maps by State, Misc. Geological Investigations, Land Use & Land Cover Maps, Misc. Field Studies Maps, Mineral Reserve, Oil & Gas Investigations Charts, Open File Reports, Oil & Gas Investigations Maps, River Surveys, Water Resource Investigations Maps, and Water Resource Investigation Reports.

Photoimage Map Series
Reed Library has USGS Satellite Image Maps for various regions of the United States at 1:250,000 scale and for Pakistan at 1:500,000 scale.

In addition, US Custom Service Color Image Border Maps for some of the Mexican/US border are available at 1:25,000 scale.

Reed Library also has a set of Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) maps covering the United States.

Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) topographical maps cover parts of some states (1:50,000 scale) and countries (1:250,000).

Individual Maps and Atlases Supporting the Curriculum
These miscellaneous political, geographic, and geologic maps cover a variety of regions throughout the world. These maps are individually cataloged within the Library of Congress system and most fall under the map subject heading and call number range of G. Some examples are: Middle East: A full Colour Wall Poster (G7420 2002 N3), Indian Lands in the United States (G3701 G55 2000 U5), and The North American Tapestry of Time and Terrain (G3701 C5 2003).

Indexes/Map Books
In addition to a series of individual state map, geologic, and topographic indexes, there is a wide-range of indexes and other books to support the map collection.

Map Series Descriptions

  • PHOTOIMAGE MAPS

Satellite Image Maps are multicolor or black-and-white photograph-like maps made from data collected by Earth resources satellites. They are a diverse group of experimental maps printed in a variety of scales and sizes, ranging from 1:24,000 for Point Loma, California, to 1:7,500,000 for the conterminous 48 States.

Most satellite image maps are printed to simulate color-infrared photography by combining imagery that was scanned in red, green, and infrared wave lengths of light. On color-infrared imagery, growing crops, grasses, and woodlands usually appear in shades of red; conifer forests in shades of reddish brown; clear water as dark blue or black; turbid water as light blue or gray; and cultural features such as cities and highways as steely blue-gray.

US Customs Service Color Image Maps cover the United States-Mexican border. 203 natural color photoimage maps at a scale of 1:25,000 have been printed, bracketing the U.S.-Mexico border and covering the entire international boundary from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

Earth Resource Technology Satellite Maps (ERTS) are a series of maps created by NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center, from a 1972 satellite flight and were produced in cooperation with the USDA Soil Conservation Service. They cover the United States and are divided up into 54 units.

  • DEFENSE MAPPING AGENCY MAPS

"The Defense Mapping Agency is charged with providing mapping, charting and geodetic support to the Department of Defense. This agency produces maps that are used for navigation, and provides geodetic support which is the science of determining the size and shape of the Earth, the precise positions of points on the Earth’s surface and variations in the pull of gravity—all of which are significant to modern weapons systems."(MC&G Mapping…Charting…Geodesy A Brief History of Military Mapmaking—and The First Decade of the Defense Mapping Agency. Washington, D.C. : Defense Mapping Agency, 1982.)

Reed Library has international DMA Maps that cover various sectors of European cities and parts of European countries including Canary Islands, Denmark, France, German, Italy, Madeira Islands, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Senegal, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom. These are all Joint Operation Graphic maps (1:250,000 scale) showing roads and topography.

In addition, there is a series of DMA Maps covering parts of the following states at 1:50,000 scale: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

        Locating Maps at Reed Library

Reed Library's Map Collection is located in a section of the reference area on the library's main floor. Maps are housed in flat map cases and file cabinets. The collection contains both cataloged and uncataloged maps. The cataloged maps include those with Library of Congress call numbers as well as those assigned local call numbers. To obtain a call number for a map, use the keyword search in the Talon Library Catalog. Cataloged maps can be found in the map cabinets and are arranged in call number order.

The uncataloged maps are arranged by map series and alphabetically by location within each series. The indexes for finding these maps are described below.

        USGS TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS
The 7 1/2 minute series (1:24,000 scale) and other topo maps are not cataloged. They are grouped by series and filed alphabetically by state and quadrangle name.

To determine the name of a quadrangle within a state, use that state's Index to Topographical and Other Map Coverage. These indexes are filed in Map Cabinet 21.

        USGS THEMATIC MAPS
Selected USGS thematic maps for the four corners area can be found by searching in the Talon Library Catalog. All thematic maps are filed by their USGS classification number. The classification numbers are alphanumeric. An example of a classification number for a Hydologic Investigations Map is HA-760. MR-220 is an example of a Mineral Reserve Map classification number.

To find a USGS classification number, consult the
Publications of the USGS Web site or consult the print volumes on the index shelf in the maps area Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey (Z1223 G34 1982). The Guide to USGS Publications (Z6028 G3 G84 1998), located on the index shelf in the maps area, can also be used to find thematic maps. Use the map locations listed below to determine the cabinet in which each type of thematic map is filed.

PHOTOIMAGE AND DEFENSE MAPPING AGENCY MAPS
Photoimage maps, including USGS Satellite Image maps, Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) maps , and U.S. Customs Service Border maps, and DMA (Defense Mapping Agency) maps are grouped by map type and filed alphabetically by region.

Index to 1:25,000 Scale US-Mexico Border Color Image Maps, G3701 A4 S25 G4, and Index to USGS/DMA 1:50,000 scale, 15-minute mapping, G3701 A2 1994 G4, are located on the index shelf. These maps are filed in Map Cabinet 20.

MAPS, INDEXES, AND ATLASES: LOCATING MATERIALS IN THE COLLECTION
Each map case, file cabinet, atlas stand, and book shelf in the Maps Collection has been assigned a number. The physical location (case or cabinet number) of each map series is noted below.
