Class Schedule:

Week 1 (January 7-11)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Class overview (including purposes and goals of class).
  3. How to log on to a lab computer.
  4. Syllabus.
  5. Students to keep copies of all their work: computer files and printed copies.
  6. Students keep notes on how they did their searching for assignments 2-4 for use in Final  Bibliography Project in Lesson 5 of  online coursepack.
  7. How to save your work on your "M" drive on the campus network.
  8. "The Case of Kelly" group exercise.
  9. Assign reading.

Week 2 (January 14-18)

Reading: Course syllabus and Lesson 1 of online coursepack.

  1. Research context: for what purpose will you use the information sources you find in class?
  2. Research topic narrowing exercises; research question development.
  3. Brief library tour.

Week 3 (January 21-25)

Due in class: Assignment 1: Reseach Question Development. Note! Do not complete the assignment ahead of time! This assignment is best done in class.

  1. Databases and the concept of searching.
  2. Human Boolean exercise.
  3. Discussion of topic assignment.
  4. Assign reading; reminder to study for test 1.
  5. In-class work on topic assignment.

Week 4 (January 28-February 1)

Reading: Lesson 2 of online coursepack.

  1. Test 1 in class.
  2. Truncation discussion.
  3. Discuss Assignment 2 of online coursepack.
  4. Library of Congress Subject Headings exercise in pairs.
  5. Finding a call number exercise.
  6. Reminder that there will be no class during week 5.
  7. Reminder that Test 2 will be given during the week 7 and that assignment 2 will also be due that day.

Week 5 (February 4-8): No class.

Week 6 (February 11-15)

  1. Search strategies for the library catalog (keywords to subject headings).
  2. Constructing search statements as a class.
  3. Library of Congress Classification System discussion.
  4. Reference collection exercise.

Week 7 (February 18-22)

Due by 10:00 pm on your class meeting day (time of library closing) in Tina's "in" box (behind the library reference desk): Assignment 2 from online coursepack.

  1. Test 2 in class.
  2. Citing and evaluating books: exercise in pairs.
  3. Research day: Assignment 2 work in class.

Week 8 (February 25-March 2)

Reading: Lesson 3 of online coursepack.

  1. What are periodicals, and why would one use them?
  2. Index "coverage."
  3. Printed versus electronic indexes.
  4. J-Store and Academic Search indexes -- searching examples.
  5. Class exercise on developing search statements.

Week 9 (March 3-7)

Spring Break! No class!

Week 10 (March 10-14)

  1. Finding an appropriate index to search for information on your topic.
  2. Scholarly versus popular discussion and exercise.
  3. Evaluating periodicals.
  4. Citing periodical articles in pairs.
  5. Discuss Assignment 3 of online coursepack.

Week 11 (March 17-21)

  1. Periodicals holdings in the online catalog.
  2. Interlibrary loan of periodical articles.
  3. Printing options for periodicals databases.
  4. Subject headings in periodicals databases.
  5. Reminder that Test 3 will be given next week.

Week 12: (March 24-28)

Due by 10:00 pm on your class meeting day (time of library closing) in Tina's "in" box (behind the library reference desk): Assignment 3 of online coursepack.

  1. Test 3 in class.
  2. Marking, saving and e-mailing results from periodicals databases.
  3. Research day: in-class work on Assignment 3 of online coursepack.

Week 13 (March 31-April 4)

Reading: Lesson 4 of online coursepack.

  1. Search tips using the Google search engine.
  2. Evaluating sources found on the Internet using the source addresses.
  3. Additional criteria for evaluating an online source.
  4. Specific sources to evaluate.
  5. Citing Internet sources.
  6. Discuss Assignment 4 of online coursepack.

Week 14 (April 7-11)

Due by 10:00 pm on your class meeting day (time of library closing) in Tina's "in" box (behind the library reference desk): Assignment 4 of online coursepack.

  1. Discuss Final Bibliography Project.
  2. Review how to locate nonprint media in the FLC library catalog and in Prospector.
  3. Research day: in-class work on Assignment 4 of online coursepack.

Week 15 (April 14-18)

Work day: in-class work on Final Bibliography Project.

Finals Week: Meet Monday at 6:45, location: EBH 64.

  1. Class wrap up discussion and review.
  2. Final Bibliography Project due.
  3. Test 4 in class.
